Surprise of all surprises, I survived the drives to and from Potsdam without becoming full of crashing my car or getting all the possible tickets. I am quite proud of myself.
Arrived at Potsdam just in time to go to class with Liz, during which the students played transcriptions of this instrumental piece that was real pretty-like, while the professor was snide at them about everything. Was most amused. If this classroom were an accurate microcosm of the musical world, the following would be true:
1. All violinists would be REAL dumb. We're talking stoopid, people.
2. All cellists would be REAL bad at sightreading.
3. All first trumpets would be extremely androgeneous.
4. All irresponsible students would be guaranteed a verbal ass-whipping by the professor, possibly combined with some time in the proverbial stocks.
Went to a diner for lunch, which was most delish. Went back to Crane and practiced ('cause we're GOOD music students) and then went to Canada for dinner. Despite my huge personality, we were not stopped by border patrol. I have learned the following things about Canada:
1. When you're just over the border, it may as well just be America except the drinking age is 19 (a real convenience for the SUNY Potsdam students)
2. Italian food and shopping are better in Canada than in Potsdam
3. Border patrol is not a thing to toy with and is real scary even though 90% of the time they won't stop you
Stopped at Hannaford on the way back to grab Avocados for guacamole for dinner Saturday night. YUM.
On Saturday morning went to the Village Diner which was also delish. Had conversations that one should not have in a diner, including the proper way to cook alien babies (since they come from pods, they're a legume and should be cooked like ochre). Then this conversation took place:
Liz: I'm trying to think of what to do today.
Me: I mean, whatevs. (I'm real helpful like that)
Liz: We could go to Lake Placid, it's like an hour and a half away.
Me: I mean, sure, why not?
Liz: Okay.
So then we went to Lake Placid. RANDOM! Turns out it's a cute little town where the shopping is to die for and all the people are the awesomes. Found much of the jewelry that was real pretty but also way too expensive, and Liz made herself earrings at this bead store that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Found a store called "There and Back Again" that had a painting of Gandalf on it, but turns out it was just for scrapbooking and not for LOTR memorabilia? Was very confusing. Bought chocolates at Adirondack Chocolate and scoured all the shops which were mostly filled with moose things and bear things and wooden things and the handmade expensive jewelry. Was so much fun!!! Ate dinner at this Italianesque place.
Went back to go to the Rockapella concert. Now, understand that at the end liked Rockapella and wanted to marry all of them a lot. Will now describe the members of the band.
High tenor: Bleach blonde, a little tanned, thin, in a three-piece black suit. Ridiculous dance moves. Had the slightly annoying habit of pulling his mic away from his mouth instead of trusting his techie to adjust so we lost his notes sometimes. Acceptable.
Medium tenor: Richard Simmons-esque hair. Grey suit. Smooth voice. White-guy type dancing. Real funny. Acceptable.
Other medium tenor: Rounder man who apparently starred in Les Mis on Broadway as well as started in Boyz II Men or something before they got famous. Temptations-esque voice. Black suit with super shiny blue shirt. Adorable.
Vocal percussionist: From Potsdam (we assume he got real good at vocal percussion because there's nothing better to do in Potsdam). REAL good. Grey and black suit. Because of his frog-esque face and his mouth noises, a little frightening.
Bass: Tall, man of color, extremely handsome. Huge range. Grey suit. Nice butt. When he sang, all the women in the audience ovulated, like, simultaneously. Wanted him to be mine.
They started out singing these original, really really pop-y, meaningless ditties that gave us the impression that they were warming up on stage. Cheesy choreography. Too much amplification with too much reverb. Now, I'm pretty sure that the beginning of the show is the result of their popularity in Japan (as Liz said, "If it can wreck Mariah Carey, it can wreck Rockapella"). Then they got on to Amish jokes, and I warmed up to them. They did a seventies medly and a fifties medly, both of which were real cute and made me like them better. They grabbed a girl out of the audience and sang to her on stage, and all the girls in the audience wanted to BE her mostly because the bass put his head on her lap. Then they did my favorite thing EVER, which was to perform all the jingles they'd ever sung, which included the following products:
1. Almond Joy (3 separate jingles)
2. Preparation H
3. Dr. Pepper
4. Folger's Coffee
Then they ended their show with the famous "Carmen Sandiego" theme song, which was amazing to hear. Their encore piece was actually my favorite song of the evening...they sang "Don't Know Much About History" without any vocal amplification at all and the vocal percussionist sang a fifth part. It's that kind of sound that made you sit back and say, "Wow, you guys are actually good! WHY DON'T YOU JUST SING LIKE THAT BECAUSE IT SOUNDS BETTER????" but I'm sure their pop careers are just too huge for them to go without mics too often. *sigh* The other disappointing thing about the show was that it was so popular it sold out, so Potsdam added a second show, that is, instead of only a 7:30 show there was a 7:30 and a 9:30 show. So...I'm pretty sure that's a really dick move because a lot of people paid money for their tickets and were probably expecting more than an hour and a half's worth of entertainment. DAMN YOU SPOTSDAM!
After the show, made enchiladas and guacamole and consumed them with great gusto. While making guacamole, cut myself with one of Liz's knives because they're kept sharp enough to shank an anrgy sabre-tooth tiger on crystal meth.
Came back to the Bing today, after stopping at home to have lunch and to present Mom with her gift: another googley bug! It reminds me of her because sometimes she is a little nuts. Received my speakers today, which, if I may say so, are the Shiz nit.
Time for bed, 'cause I have class real early. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
