Thank you, Binghamton. Thank you for containing all the possible Jewish people, because now I have a holiday where I didn't expect one and can travel to see my friends. Is this how Jewish kids feel about Christmas? I suspect so.
I have all the possible love for the CNY. I do. I really do. These are the things I love in the 315:
1. Treating the world as if it were a zoo for our amusement only
2. The giant anchor in Oriskany, always good for a photo shoot
3. The casino, with it's gaudy-but-so-amusing everythings and stealable mints and pens
4. The Graffenburg Demon
5. Coffee - Barnes, Domenico's (and The Chatterbox, now unfortunately gone forever)
6. The top of the world
7. The Great New York State Fair
8. Little towns with amusing things
9. Being followed by the same Sherriff car twice in one night
The problem with the CNY is it feels very done, very "I've already done this." I am a firm believer in the concept that rural areas are not boring, you just have to look for things to do. Well, we've looked for and found and done those things. They are now over. This is why people need to come visit me in Bingmamtonshire - so the creative will be fresh again. This will happen soon, and I will be all of the happy. That being said, I could not think of better people to do "all of the same old" with than I have. Oh the select few of people from my undergraduate education I have chosen to maintain an emotional attachment to, how I am emotionally attached to you.
This afternoon went to go see Amy in Old Forge and met her two lovely children. Could not get over how cute they are! It's a bit mind-boggling and sets the old biological clock a-ticking to think that Amy is only a year older than me and has already settled down with the Mom life and is loving it. Olin seems very nice too...she has a whole wonderful life built up for herself already with her kids and her dog and her husband and fish and pottery-making! Unfortunately I have an opera career to start before I can do that. Or, perhaps fortunately. The fact is that if I had kids I wasn't satisfied with I'd probably just give them to people who care. That is, give them to people who care...for a reasonable yet profitable "adoption fee."
I should not have children. This is settled now.
In the meantime, I am much looking forward to my weekend of high pop culture value known as "the trip to Potsdam to see Rockapella." If I get a chance to get an autograph, I fully intend to ask them if they know where Carmen is hanging out these days.
