Well, here's the annual Friday post again, eh?
The big, overriding theme of life this week and next is that Don Giovanni, the FIRST OPERA I GET TO BE INVOLVED IN EVER, opens next Friday, Nov. 2. Holy smokes, that's a week from today! I'm real real excited about it, and as the rehearsals go on I'm less and less intimidated by the amazing singers around me and more and more happy to be in a socializing group of creative people again. It's been so long! My costume is okay, although we have to wear hip rolls over our petticoats, so our asses look huge a la the ugly stepsisters in the Disney animated version of Cinderella and also my boobs don't show enough for this kind of peasant-y deal. Push-up bras are in order here!
Yesterday and today I covered classes for Prof. Burns, who is out of town. I was supposed to show the classes movies, which were SO RIVETING that the class was SO EXCITED to see them. Yesterday went all right, because it was a small class and I handed them back lots of graded papers and the first DVD had interesting stuff on it and then the second DVD was almost entirely in Hindi, and there were no subtitles, so I took it out and tried to play the first DVD again but then it wouldn't load so they got to leave a 1/2 hour early. The class this morning was less okay, mostly because it's a GenEd class of like 120 kids and when they found out Burns wasn't in, most of them left right away. I took attendance at the end of class in hopes we can give the ones that stuck it out some extra credit? We'll see what he says.
So, here are the duties I performed for my TA position this week:
1. Set up/took down class Monday, Wednesday, Friday (1 hour)
2. Ran class on Thursday (1 hour)
3. Ran class on Friday (1 hour)
4. Collected homework, graded homework, posted grades on Blackblard (1 hour)
5. Uploaded musical examples to Blackboard (1 hour)
It's like I'm a professor a little bit or something!
This week I'm hearing from all kinds of people that I haven't heard from in awhile, so much so that I'm a little taken aback! I got two pleasant text messages from Vin, and Pat (from my summer in Boston) immed me Wednesday evening. Crazy times!
Now for the "adventure" part of my story. I think my humidifier has been making me sick a la the black mold I found in it at the beginning of the semester? So I was a bit ill this week, but on mother's advice I pitched the humidifier and bought a can of Lysol, with which I have been daily disinfecting my life. I feel better a bit...in fact, I felt so much better on Wednesday that I followed through with my agreement to sing the Messiah recitatives for Bruce Borton's undergrad conducting class. The thing is, there are 13 kids in the class, and I sang them pretty much twice for all of them...which means I sang the recits 26 times in a row? In an hour? Now I'm recovering from that. I'm not going to sing this weekend in the hopes that my voice will be back next week for when Tim comes back from his journeys.
All I want to do is sit around and watch some Wagner opera, but unfortunately work and life plague me. These are the things that need doing:
1. All the reading for Music History for 2 weeks, because I'm not going to have time to read production weekend
2. Revising my outline for Music History
3. Doing poetry analysis for Bill
4. Researching/filling out summer program applications
5. Doing more research and finding of sources for Music History
6. Writing translations for and learning more rep for when Tim comes back (hard to do when you're not singing)
Aack. Oh well, rehearsal in 2 1/2 hours. Must be off!
