Is watching someone on a screen and feeling like they're family well...weird?

I went to go see RiffTrax Live with my sister on Thursday night in Syracuse, and I have to say it was awesome. There were a couple of bizarre things about the experience:

1. Everyone in the theater was white
The demographic of something like this is kind of bizarre. I mean, I know I'm pretty geeky and white I liked Mystery Science Theater and also like RiffTrax now, but really...everyone in the theater looked the same. We were mostly white, between the ages of 15 and 40, and mostly men. My sister and I were by FAR the prettiest girls in the theater (and I don't say that lightly!). I thought maybe it was just because we were in upstate NY, but nope, the people at the live theater in Tennessee looked like us too! Are we a cult? Are we racist? I'm not sure what this boils down to but it made me the eentsiest bit uncomfortable.

2. I really love Mike, Bill, and Kevin. Like, a lot.
The first MST3K episode I saw was one morning at like 6am when they were still on Comedy Central (so at least 13 years ago) and I was sick. They were hilarious and I was hooked immediately. I followed them on SciFi for years as a normal-type fan, not collecting videos or anything but loving them wherever I could find them. When RiffTrax came to my attention, I almost cried. They're silly, and talented, and goofy, and great guys. My fangirldom for those three approaches the love I have for my favorite uncles that I wish I could see more often. If you haven't ever heard of RiffTrax or seen their act, check it out - they've riffed on everything from Star Wars to Jurassic Park to Twilight to Roadhouse and Top Gun so there's something for everyone!

Ef always says that he thinks people who get all gaga over celebrities are bizarre, because they don't know them at all. When I think about the RiffTrax guys, I think as fans we know them better than one would know your average, garden-variety celebrity because they write their own act, and everything they say in their script comes from things they've actually said while watching these terrible movies over and over.

I just wish I could work at RiffTrax. You guys need a musician? Call me.
